Schizophrenia
1 John 5:18-19; Psalm 19:12-14
Schizophrenia A. The World’s Perspective 1. Diagnosis. From the DSM-IV: Two (or more) of the following, each present for a significant portion of time during a one month period. – Delusions – Hallucinations – Disorganized Speech – Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior – Areas of functioning such as work, interpersonal relations, or self-care are marked below the level acheived prior to the onset. 2. Prescription – control behavior (thinking/actions) through drugs. B. The Bible’s Perspective 1. Diagnosis – The closest thing to schizophrenia in the Bible is demon-possession. – Bizarre behavior is often a ruse for hiding sin or to keep from dealing with the obligations of life. – Bizarre behavior can also be the consequence of unrepentant sin. 2. Prescription Control behavior through repentance and godly living. – Do not by sympathetic toward their bizarre behavior, rather explain to them the Bible’s perspective on it. – Identify life situations they are attempting to avoid, or the existence of unrepentant sin. – Immediately repent of all sinful conduct, speech, or thinking (past, present, and future). – Teach them the importance of maintaining respectable, responsible behavior. – Establish godly expectations regarding control of their behavior.
