Regarding Christ’s death as penal, Stephen Travis in “Christ And The Judgment Of God” writes,
“There is no place [in the OT] for the popular idea (in Evangelicalism) that in the sacrificial ritual God is somehow punishing the animal…or for the inference that something parallel to that is happening in the sacrificial death of Christ.” (p. 197)
